About the competition

Your first line is: ‘He had an uneasy feeling as he inserted the key…‘ (‘He’ can be changed to ‘She’ or ‘I’). You have to write the rest of the story. Maximum length: 3000 words.

The winning entry will be published in the winter 2023 edition of Scribble. Short listed entries may also be published at a later date.

All entries to competitions must be previously unpublished (including internet) and the writer’s own work.

Competition guideline

  • All entries to competitions must be previously unpublished (including internet) and the writer’s own work. Postal entries must be typed or word-processed on single sides of a4 paper (or similar). If you enter by post and wish to be advised of safe arrival please enclose a stamped, self-addressed postcard. Entry forms are not required but please enclose a cover sheet with your name, address and title of entry. And don’t forget the usual self-addressed envelope with correct postage for return of unsuccessful entries/critique. Non-subscribers can pay the entry fee by using the button below. Email entries must be in the main body of the email and not sent as an attachment. Please include title of story,approximate word count and your full name and address including postcode. Your details will then confirm payment when your sumission arrives.
