The Alpine Fellowship Writing Prize 2023
Deadline: March 1, 2023
Awarded for the best piece of writing on the theme of the Alpine Fellowship 2023 – Flourishing. The winner of the Writing Prize will receive a cash prize, and the runners up will receive travel expense support that must be used to attend our 2023 symposium which will be held from 10th-13th August 2023 in Fjällnäs, Sweden.
The Grace Paley Prize for Short Fiction
Deadline: March 3, 2023
Spearheaded by writer Gerry LaFemina when he served on the AWP Board, the prize honors Grace Paley, “one of the great writers of voice in the twentieth century.” The endowment funds a $5,500 prize for short fiction and publication of a short story collection by Red Hen.
AWP Prize for Creative Nonfiction

AWP sponsors the Award Series, an annual competition for the publication of excellent new book-length works. The competition is open to all authors writing in English regardless of nationality or residence, and is available to published and unpublished authors alike.

AWP’s Award Series is an annual competition for the publication of excellent new book-length
works. The competition is open to all authors writing in English regardless of nationality or
residence, and it is open to published and unpublished authors alike.
The Award Series conducts an evaluation process of writers for writers by writers. AWP hires
a staff of screeners who are themselves writers; the screeners review manuscripts for the
judges. Typically, the screeners will select ten manuscripts in each genre for each judge’s final
evaluations.
The Donald Hall Prize for Poetry
Deadline: March 3, 2023
Started by AWP Board President Emeritus Martin Lammon, the prize honors Donald Hall, former US poet laureate and a remarkable teacher and mentor. The endowment provides funding for the $5,500 Donald Hall Prize for Poetry and publication by University of Pittsburg Press.
The Berkeley Fiction Review Sudden Fiction Contest
Deadline: March 5, 2023
Submit pieces under 1000 words for a chance to be featured in the next issue of our journal as well as a cash prize of up to $150!
The Nervous Ghost Press Prize for Poetry
Deadline: March 31, 2023
The Nervous Ghost Press Prize for Poetry is open to all writers in the United States of America. All work must be unpublished, original, and written by one author.
General Guidelines: Full & complete manuscript of 48 to 128 pages; PDF document with title page, table of contents, and numbered pages; please do not include any artwork or other visual aspects (if your work is chosen, these can be added later); $0 reading fee. All finalists will be considered for publication.
Prize: $1000, Publication, author copies, and a California Reading Tour.
Fish Poetry Prize 2023
Deadline: March 31, 2023
The Fish Poetry Prize was established in 2006. Previous judges include Billy Collins, Brian Turner, Leanne O’Sullivan, Michael McCarthy, Peter Fallon, Matthew Sweeney, Paul Durcan, Ruth Padel, Nick Laird and Jo Shapcott.
We are delighted that Billy Collins will again be judging. Billy will select the 10 poems to be published in the Fish Anthology 2023.
The Restless Books Prize For New Immigrant Writing
Deadline: March 31, 2023
The Restless Books Prize for New Immigrant Writing was created in 2015 to honor outstanding debut literary works by first-generation immigrants, awarded for fiction and nonfiction in alternating years. The winner receives $10,000 and publication by Restless Books.
Submissions for the 2023 Prize in Nonfiction are open from December 12, 2022 to March 31, 2023. Finalists will be announced in late summer and published in The Common.
