Africanfuturism and Worldbuilding in Science Fiction

October 19, 2021 @ 4:30 pm - 5:45 pm EDT

Africanfuturism and Worldbuilding in Science Fiction
A conversation with science fiction writer Nnedi Okorafor on building fictional worlds and better futures.

About this event

Award-winning writer Nnedi Okorafor joins Matt Bell’s “Writing Science Fiction” class for a conversation about her acclaimed novel “Lagoon,” as well as issues of worldbuilding in science fiction and fantasy, Africanfuturism and other genres.

Together they will discuss how imagining fictional worlds might make new possibilities reachable in our own futures.

Okorafor’s works include “Who Fears Death” (in development at HBO into a TV series), the “Binti” novella trilogy (optioned and in development with Media Res) and many other novels, stories and comics. She is the winner of Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy, Locus and Lodestar Awards, and her debut novel “Zahrah the Windseeker” won the prestigious Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature.

Registrants will view this virtual discussion on YouTube.

This event is part of ASU Humanities Week and is cosponsored by The College Division of Humanities, the Institute for Humanities Research and the Department of English.

Please note:

The Valley of Writers team scours the web looking for the most inspiring, elevating, and accessible events that we can share as a service to our readers.
The big idea is that in a virtual arena, more people can participate. Geographical boundaries matter less.
The events we list are virtual and can be attended by writers from wherever they are in the world.
Unless otherwise stated, we are not affiliated with and do not benefit financially from the events we post. Listing is not an endorsement of the content, opinions, or products promoted by the event organizers we feature here.
Please verify all dates, times and other event details as these are subject to change and are beyond our control.

What qualifies an event as ‘lit’? Any event that we think would teach writers of fiction, memoir, and poetry useful skills, inspire them to produce great work, remind them of the power of this work we do and build stronger, mutually beneficial ties between writers and other creatives.
