About this event
Ever thought of making a living from writing?
There’s all sorts of possibilities from copywriting for advertising agencies to editing other people’s books through to journalism and writing your own books. And it does not have to be full time. Many people make a bit on the side from their writing or editing skills.
Christian Wolmar has been writing ever since his days editing the university paper and has done it all – from writing up football matches to penning books on railways and from being a local government correspondent to covering the great and the good in Parliament. In this presentation he will take you through his long career in journalism and writing books and give you key tips on how to go about making money from writing – and offer a few hints about appearing on radio and TV.
Christian Wolmar is an award winning writer and broadcaster specialising in transport and is the author of a series of books on railway history. He is a frequent speaker at conferences and railway events, and regularly appears on TV and radio. In 2011 he was the captain of the Warwick team of graduates in Christmas University Challenge, which reached the final of the competition. He has spent nearly all of his working life as a journalist. Although he mainly concentrates on transport matters, he has covered many other social policy issues and has written on a wide range of subjects, from cricket to the Private Finance Initiative. Christian now divides his time between journalism, media appearances and writing books and political campaigning. He writes regularly for a wide variety of publications including newspapers such as The Times and The Guardian – he has written for every national newspaper except the Star – and numerous magazines, such as The Oldie and Public Finance.

Please note:
The Valley of Writers team scours the web looking for the most inspiring, elevating, and accessible events that we can share as a service to our readers.
The big idea is that in a virtual arena, more people can participate. Geographical boundaries matter less.
The events we list are virtual and can be attended by writers from wherever they are in the world.
Unless otherwise stated, we are not affiliated with and do not benefit financially from the events we post. Listing is not an endorsement of the content, opinions, or products promoted by the event organizers we feature here.
Please verify all dates, times and other event details as these are subject to change and are beyond our control.
What qualifies an event as ‘lit’? Any event that we think would teach writers of fiction, memoir, and poetry useful skills, inspire them to produce great work, remind them of the power of this work we do and build stronger, mutually beneficial ties between writers and other creatives.
