Free
Overcome the obstacles in your writing in order to flourish and publish.
About this event
DESCRIPTION:
Writers are faced with many challenges when it comes to being creative, getting into flow and writing. Obstacles may get in the way, some of which are externally inflicted (think pandemics, bushfires, moving house) and some are internal (mindset, stories we tell ourselves, procrastination, excuses). So how do you overcome the obstacles that life throws at you and what goes on in your mind to still be able to write and write well? More than that, how do you learn to harness the power of those obstacles?
Kathryn Heyman will share her experiences and the strategies, exercises and solutions she’s used in her own work and to help hundreds of writers overcome their own obstacles in order to flourish and publish.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Dr Kathryn Heyman is an internationally award-winning writer of novels, memoir, and plays for radio and stage. She has taught creative for the University of Oxford and is now the director of the Australian Writers Mentoring Program. Over two decades, she’s coached hundreds of writers from idea to publication. Her seventh book, Fury (a memoir) won the CAL Author Fellowship and is shortlisted for the Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- In this session you will learn:
- how to recognise internal obstacles
- exercises to implement to overcome obstacles internal and external
- how others have dealt with obstacles and gone on to win awards

Please note:
The Valley of Writers team scours the web looking for the most inspiring, elevating, and accessible events that we can share as a service to our readers.
The big idea is that in a virtual arena, more people can participate. Geographical boundaries matter less.
The events we list are virtual and can be attended by writers from wherever they are in the world.
Unless otherwise stated, we are not affiliated with and do not benefit financially from the events we post. Listing is not an endorsement of the content, opinions, or products promoted by the event organizers we feature here.
Please verify all dates, times and other event details as these are subject to change and are beyond our control.
What qualifies an event as ‘lit’? Any event that we think would teach writers of fiction, memoir, and poetry useful skills, inspire them to produce great work, remind them of the power of this work we do and build stronger, mutually beneficial ties between writers and other creatives.
