About this event
The Journal of Expressive Writing is more than a publication. We aim to be an engaged and supportive community of writers and listeners. Giving our focused attention to each other’s voices, stories and writing is a generous, necessary act of humanity, repair and celebration.
On February 2, 2022, our monthly OPEN MIC series will feature writer Laura Davis plus 20 other writers who will read their work. Our feature writer will read for 30 minutes. Each of our contributing authors will have 3 minutes to read their best expressive writing, poetry, stories, free writing, non-fiction, personal essay, memoir, reflective essay, prose, contemplative discourse, and creative non-fiction.
Our featured writer, Laura Davis is a six-time bestselling author. Her books, including The Courage to Heal and I Thought We’d Never Speak Again have been translated into 11 languages and sold 1.8 million copies. Laura leads writing workshops in the U.S. and internationally that focus on writing as a tool for healing and transformation.
Laura’s 2021 memoir, The Burning Light of Two Stars, tells the story of her dramatic and tumultuous relationship with her mother, Temme, from the time of Laura’s birth until her mother’s death. This story about “two souls who just wouldn’t quit each other” provides a no-holds-barred peek at the real Laura–the woman behind the teacher, the facilitator, and author. Laura lives in Santa Cruz, California with her spouse Karyn and their new yellow lab puppy, Luna. Learn more at: www.LauraDavis.net.
Come listen to Laura Davis and 20 other amazing authors read their work LIVE!
The Journal’s OPEN MIC is FREE to attend and OPEN TO ALL, but you do need to Pre-Register here through eventbrite to get the live Zoom link.
The OPEN MIC series is produced and hosted by Kelly DuMar.

Please note:
The Valley of Writers team scours the web looking for the most inspiring, elevating, and accessible events that we can share as a service to our readers.
The big idea is that in a virtual arena, more people can participate. Geographical boundaries matter less.
The events we list are virtual and can be attended by writers from wherever they are in the world.
Unless otherwise stated, we are not affiliated with and do not benefit financially from the events we post. Listing is not an endorsement of the content, opinions, or products promoted by the event organizers we feature here.
Please verify all dates, times and other event details as these are subject to change and are beyond our control.
What qualifies an event as ‘lit’? Any event that we think would teach writers of fiction, memoir, and poetry useful skills, inspire them to produce great work, remind them of the power of this work we do and build stronger, mutually beneficial ties between writers and other creatives.
