About this event
Session Eleven: Short and sweet
The key to writing excellent short plays and what short plays can teach us about writing longer ones. Generating ideas for short plays and how to develop these for the short form. Opportunities for short plays; opportunities for the playwright.
Course Outline:
Following on from the Beginners Playwriting course, the 11-month Advanced course delves deeper into each topic, as well as introducing some new and highly relevant concepts for the emerging playwright. The aim of this course is to nurture the writer as well as their work, encouraging individuals to examine their writer identities and experiment outside of their comfort zones by exploring unfamiliar genres and forms.
Combining theory, written exercises, textual analysis and personal exploration, the workshops explore Worldbuilding, Character, Dramatic Action, how to write a great Scene, how to write good dialogue and spot and fix common problems in bad dialogue. Over three workshops, we look in minute detail at how to develop plot, character and themes from beginning, middle to end through Acts 1, 2 and 3.
Please note there is a supporting Google Classroom for this course and the direct link to join can be found in confirmation email under the Additional information section.

Please note:
The Valley of Writers team scours the web looking for the most inspiring, elevating, and accessible events that we can share as a service to our readers.
The big idea is that in a virtual arena, more people can participate. Geographical boundaries matter less.
The events we list are virtual and can be attended by writers from wherever they are in the world.
Unless otherwise stated, we are not affiliated with and do not benefit financially from the events we post. Listing is not an endorsement of the content, opinions, or products promoted by the event organizers we feature here.
Please verify all dates, times and other event details as these are subject to change and are beyond our control.
What qualifies an event as ‘lit’? Any event that we think would teach writers of fiction, memoir, and poetry useful skills, inspire them to produce great work, remind them of the power of this work we do and build stronger, mutually beneficial ties between writers and other creatives.
