Playwright Lucy Kaufman guides you through all the vital aspects of writing a play, from the initial idea to the finished play on the stage.

About this event

Session One: What is a Play?

An introduction and the main features of playwriting:

  • How plays differ from films, novels and TV
  • The limitations of the play form and how these create opportunities for the playwright
  • Introduction to settings and plots which work well on stage for the magic of theatre

Course Outline:

This comprehensive 11-month course guides the aspiring playwright through all the fundamental important aspects of playwriting, from generating ideas and creating characters, to structuring a story for the stage. Each workshop explores one or more aspects in depth, including creating conflict and drama, developing themes and message, worldbuilding, engaging your audience throughout, how to format a play as a written script, and writing sparkling, purposeful dialogue which leaps off the page.

The course combines theory with practical advice and first-hand experience, covering full-length plays, short plays and monologues. Participants are encouraged to create work which will be producible by theatres in the real world. The classes include written exercises alongside engagement with play texts and performed scenes.

Please note there is a supporting Google Classroom for this course and the direct link to join can be found in confirmation email under the Additional information section.

Please note:

The Valley of Writers team scours the web looking for the most inspiring, elevating, and accessible events that we can share as a service to our readers.
The big idea is that in a virtual arena, more people can participate. Geographical boundaries matter less.
The events we list are virtual and can be attended by writers from wherever they are in the world.
Unless otherwise stated, we are not affiliated with and do not benefit financially from the events we post. Listing is not an endorsement of the content, opinions, or products promoted by the event organizers we feature here.
Please verify all dates, times and other event details as these are subject to change and are beyond our control.

What qualifies an event as ‘lit’? Any event that we think would teach writers of fiction, memoir, and poetry useful skills, inspire them to produce great work, remind them of the power of this work we do and build stronger, mutually beneficial ties between writers and other creatives.
