FREE | Poetry prescriptions from Dr Norman Rosenthal – a book chat

June 9 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT

Free
Dr Norman Rosenthal - Poetry Rx

What it is

An online book chat with Dr. Norman Rosenthal, psychiatrist and clinical professor of psychiatry, and author of several books, including his new book, Poetry Rx: How 50 Inspiring Poems Can Heal and Bring Joy to Your Life (G&D Media, May 4, 2021). It is hosted by the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, MD.

This event is part of Summer Break Baltimore, a free program for all ages that encourages literacy and learning in our community. We like.

Why we think this is a hot event

A therapist who openly believes that poetry is therapeutic and actually uses it in his practice! How many of those do you know? We’ve been dying for this. We love it when science meets the arts. AND a percentage of book sale proceeds will go to the David Lynch Foundation’s Resilient Warrior Program to help stem the epidemic of suicides among U.S. military veterans.

How to attend

The conversation will be broadcast on the Enoch Pratt Free Library Facebook page. It can be watched after the broadcast on the library’s Facebook Live.

How to really get into the mix

Would you like a poetry prescription from Dr. Rosenthal? Email [email protected] before the event describing a specific emotion or situation or bring your request to the Book Chat and, unless there is a tsunami of requests Dr. Rosenthal will prescribe some poetic medicine for you.

“Poetry Rx is a great read, entertaining as it teaches. These are, after all, poems the doctor ordered. But what a doctor! And what poems!”
—Peter Sacks, Professor of English, Harvard

He’s deep, this dude.

He has researched other innovative psychiatric treatments and is the author of several books including the New York Times bestseller Transcendence: Healing and Transformation through Transcendental Meditation and the national bestseller Super Mind. He currently maintains a private clinical and coaching practice in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. His work has earned him national and international attention in the world of psychiatry and psychology, as well as in the media.

Please note:

The Valley of Writers team scours the web looking for the most inspiring, elevating, and accessible events that we can share as a service to our readers.
The big idea is that in a virtual arena, more people can participate. Geographical boundaries matter less.
The events we list are virtual and can be attended by writers from wherever they are in the world.
Unless otherwise stated, we are not affiliated with and do not benefit financially from the events we post. Listing is not an endorsement of the content, opinions, or products promoted by the event organizers we feature here.
Please verify all dates, times and other event details as these are subject to change and are beyond our control.

What qualifies an event as ‘lit’? Any event that we think would teach writers of fiction, memoir, and poetry useful skills, inspire them to produce great work, remind them of the power of this work we do and build stronger, mutually beneficial ties between writers and other creatives.
