About this event

Join us for a virtual scriptwriting masterclass with Ian Pike.

This masterclass pools from scriptwriter Ian Pike’s experiences across comedy, drama and animation. He will share the rules and tips he has accumulated over 26 years of working with top producers, broadcaster, editors, directors and fellow writers. Covering narrative structure and storytelling, plotting, character, dialogue, beginnings, endings, working with theme, avoiding cliches, self-editing and just about every facet of writing.

Speaker details

A full-time writer of scripts and published children’s books, Ian was born in Zimbabwe. After training as an actor, he briefly became a stand-up comedian before going on to create his own series ideas, in animation, comedy and drama as well as working on long running programmes. Work over the last few years has seen Ian selected as one of 10 writers from 1000 applications, for a TriForce Creative Network Have I Got News For You workshop, and from this selected as one of only 4 writers for paid commissions on the next few series. He is currently working on an original sit com for James Corden’s production company, Fulwell 73 and has been developing a new series idea for the actor Adrian Edmundson.

Past work includes:

  • An original comedy drama, written in development with Ben Miller.
  • Sit coms written for Channel K, Carlton Television and the Comedy Unit.
  • Several years on Hollyoaks, writing over 50 episodes, the late night special In too deep, and the spinoff series Let Loose.
  • A daytime drama serial commissioned that tackled adult literacy for BBC Learning.
  • Two original series ideas commissioned by BBC Drama North.
  • Co-creating a spin series off to Hotel Babylon set in an airport for Carnival Films.
  • Co-writing episodes of Waterloo Road and Eastenders.
  • An original teen series developed for Leopard drama.
  • As well as writing all the adaptation episodes for the BBC3 series The Fear.

Ian’s work in children’s TV has included being selected for a CBBC residential. Then writing episodes of Dennis and Gnasher and Yo Diary for CBBC.

Please note:

The Valley of Writers team scours the web looking for the most inspiring, elevating, and accessible events that we can share as a service to our readers.
The big idea is that in a virtual arena, more people can participate. Geographical boundaries matter less.
The events we list are virtual and can be attended by writers from wherever they are in the world.
Unless otherwise stated, we are not affiliated with and do not benefit financially from the events we post. Listing is not an endorsement of the content, opinions, or products promoted by the event organizers we feature here.
Please verify all dates, times and other event details as these are subject to change and are beyond our control.

What qualifies an event as ‘lit’? Any event that we think would teach writers of fiction, memoir, and poetry useful skills, inspire them to produce great work, remind them of the power of this work we do and build stronger, mutually beneficial ties between writers and other creatives.
