About this event
Presented by the Young Eager Writers Association:
Readers love a good action scene—whether it’s a car chase, a fist fight, the first game of the season, or the State Championships. We love to root for our main character in these moments of physical struggle. But in order to do that, we need to care about the characters, set the scene, and describe the action in a way that is clear and engaging. And what if you’ve never been in a knife fight or won that trophy? In this workshop, you’ll discover the ingredients of a successful action/sports scene, develop the tools you need to write one, and have time to practice and put those tools to work—even if you’re not an international spy or Olympic athlete.
Emma Kress (she/her) is a young adult novelist, teacher, and action-movie fan. Her debut young-adult novel Dangerous Play (Macmillan) is an action and sports thriller about a team of field hockey players who become vigilantes that released on August 3rd. She’s a long-time teacher of nearly twenty years and was a finalist for NY State Teacher of the Year in 2014. A graduate of Vassar College and Columbia University’s Teachers College, she also earned her MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults at the Vermont College of Fine Arts. She lives in Saratoga Springs, NY with her family, who all agree that Die Hard is absolutely a holiday movie. Visit her at www.emmakress.com. About the organizer
The Young Eager Writers Association, founded by Desiree Brown, is an organization motivated to provide young writers with opportunities, resources, education, and connections to help them establish strong foundations in their writing careers. Because of the yew tree’s long life expectancy, it is used as our symbol to represent our goal to create long-sustaining writing futures and communities. As the YEW Association manages the annual YEW Conference, The YEW Journal, workshops, podcasts, and other services, we hope to keep inspiring eager writers throughout their journey to success.

Please note:
The Valley of Writers team scours the web looking for the most inspiring, elevating, and accessible events that we can share as a service to our readers.
The big idea is that in a virtual arena, more people can participate. Geographical boundaries matter less.
The events we list are virtual and can be attended by writers from wherever they are in the world.
Unless otherwise stated, we are not affiliated with and do not benefit financially from the events we post. Listing is not an endorsement of the content, opinions, or products promoted by the event organizers we feature here.
Please verify all dates, times and other event details as these are subject to change and are beyond our control.
What qualifies an event as ‘lit’? Any event that we think would teach writers of fiction, memoir, and poetry useful skills, inspire them to produce great work, remind them of the power of this work we do and build stronger, mutually beneficial ties between writers and other creatives.
