I updated my author site to the latest version of WordPress, now my widgets admin page is blank. Fix?
WordPress is advancing rapidly and in 2021 alone has four major updates planned. Just two days ago, on July 20, WordPress 5.8 a.k.a. ‘Tatum’, came out.
One of the big changes with this new version of WordPress is that you can now use blocks from the Gutenberg editor in widget areas. This means you can have any block in a sidebar or footer widget area for instance.
If your new widgets admin area is not loading after an update, a quick fix is to install and activate the classic widgets plugin which returns the old widgets admin interface that we’re used.
Here’s how you do this.
Before you make any major changes to your website always make a backup. There are a number of backup plugins that you can choose from to make this process simple. I personally love BackUpWPup and Updraft Plus, in that order.
- In the admin area for your WordPress website, navigate to ‘Plugins > Add New’
- When the ‘Add New Plugin’ page opens up, type ‘Classic Widgets’ into the search bar at the top right.
- Select the Classic Widgets plugin.
- Click install.
- Click activate.
- Go to your Widgets Admin again (Appearance > Widgets) and check it out.
