About the competition

The Not Quite Write Prize for Flash Fiction is an international writing event that challenges writers to create an original piece of flash fiction based on two typical writing prompts plus one anti-prompt. Participants will compete for AU$2,000 in cash prizes, including AU$1,000 for the winner, cash prizes for the entire shortlist and two bonus ‘wildcard’ prizes.

The competition is open to all ages and levels of ability all over the world.

The Not Quite Write Prize for Flash Fiction is different to most flash fiction competitions for various reasons. Firstly, you have only two days in which to write your 500-word story (because you won’t receive the competition prompts until 18th October). Secondly, instead of just one prompt, there are two… plus an additional anti-prompt, which urges you to break a specific ‘rule’ of writing. This will either get your creative juices flowing or have you tearing your hair out, but we are really drawn to the originality of the competition… and indeed the AU$2,000 in cash prizes available!

When the competition kicks-off, the prompts will be announced by email. Entrants will receive details about how and where to submit their entry when the competition opens.

There is a total prize pool of AU$2,000 up for grabs in each round of the competition:

  • 1st place – AU$1,000
  • 2nd place – AU$500
  • 3rd place – AU$200
  • 4th place – AU$100
  • Honourable mention – AU$50

The next round of the competition commences at midday 12.00pm AEDT Friday 18 October 2024 (Sydney, Australia time). Entrants have until midnight AEDT on Sunday 20 October 2024 to submit a 500-word piece of original fiction in response to the given criteria.
